
My main point for this much-reviewed product is to correct a severe error in the Amazon listing. Under “Product Features” the page currently (April 9, 2010) says:
–Chest transmitter belt sends data to the receiver at a distance of up to 98 feet (30 meters)
This would be an enormous advantage over competing products if ture, but the actual product user manual says this on that exact subject: “The Transmitter and Wrist Receiver Monitor should be worn or mounted within 50 centimeters (20 inches) from each others”.
The language which actually contains the distance of 98 feet is the specified maximum submergence depth.
Other than that, I am pleased with the out-of-box experience on the unit. The chest strap fits fine, setting is reasonably intuitive. The display contrast is somewhat weak (that put it down to four stars for me). The wrist strap might need an extra hole drilled for the small wristed. I’m not truly tiny (145 pound 5′6″ male of average bone size) and I’m only on the second hole.
My real gripes with three previous exercise heart monitors have been battery life, battery accessibility, and strap stretching. This unit has a screw-off back for the receiver (my preferred option) and a coin-operable hatch for the battery in the transmitter. I just tested by opening both, and did have trouble with the O-ring for the transmitter wanting to get sideways–I suggest you not open it before need if you plan to swim with it.
The manual advises that you take the receiver to a jeweler for battery change to assure preserving the water resistance. I had already opened it before reading that point. Actually I did not notice an O-ring problem on that one, but replacing the screws was made maddeningly fiddly by the way their entry point was recessed below the bulging back of the case. Also the battery mount itself looked rather forbidding, not at all the easy change seen in the transmitter. (sorry, it just went down to three stars for those issues).
As to features I miss, not much, though I would like to get session average heart rate–something my budget model from another manufacturer does.

What should I look for in a heart rate monitor?
Im starting a fitness class that requires a heart rate monitor. I dont Fitness Heart Rate Monitor want to buy one and be unhappy with it, but I dont know how to shop for one. Any fitness buffs out there that know about them? Is there a certain type or brand you would recommend? Any information will certainly help me. thanks!

It will mean that you will have, literally at your fingertips, all the information professional athletes use to reach world class performance standards. Perhaps you don't have aspirations to become world class but if you exercise with a monitor it will enable you to get the very best out of your training effort.
The very earliest monitors were introduced in the early eighties and since then they have continued to evolve. Features that cost hundreds only years ago are now fitted as standard on even the most basic monitor.
Exercise heart rate monitors measure and display your heart beats. Why is this important you may ask. Your heart is a muscle and like any muscle the more it is exercised the Fitness Heart Rate Monitor stronger and fitter it becomes. If you correctly exercise your heart it means that it will pump blood around your body without having to overwork and cause stress.
What is the best way to exercise? A simple formula to work out your maximum HR that you should go up to is taking your age from 220. Lets say you are 30 years old by. You maximum heart rate would be 220 -30=190. Now this does not mean that you must exercise so that your rate is 190 beats per minute, It is a very simple calculation of the maximum permissible HR that you should reach during exercise. This is just a rough guide.
The benefit of using a heart rate monitor to record your heart beats is that you know instantly when you reach this peak level. Many monitors allow you to set a Zone for your heart rate. This will let you exercise between a specified range or zone. Usually the zone is a percentage of your maximum hearts rate, and will vary depending on your fitness. So going back to our example a 30 year old who has never exercised would be advised to set their zone to 50 to 60 %. So in this example you would be exercising and trying to keep your heart beats to within 90 and 100 beats per minute. If whilst you are working out you exceed or under achieve you will be warned either with an audible alarm or via the display. You will then know that you should either increase or decrease your effort to stay within your zone. This will give you heart the most beneficial work out for the exercise or effort expended.
